Challenges in Roman Urdu NLP: A Researcher's Perspective
Exploring the unique linguistic challenges of processing code-mixed Roman Urdu–English text and how modern NLP techniques address them.
Introduction
Roman Urdu is the informal transliteration of Urdu using Latin script. It presents unique challenges for natural language processing (NLP) systems. It lacks standardized orthography, uses highly variable spelling, and frequently mixes with English.
Key Challenges
No Standard Orthography: One word has dozens of Roman spellings. For example, "good" (اچھا) appears as acha, achha, or atcha.
Code-Mixing: Speakers blend Urdu and English within single sentences. This causes standard tokenization and POS tagging to fail.
Informal Noise: Social media text introduces slang and abbreviations. Standard preprocessing pipelines cannot process these phonetic variations.
Our Approach
We developed a custom text normalization pipeline. It combines edit-distance algorithms, phonetic matching, and a Roman Urdu lexicon. This pipeline standardizes text before it reaches downstream NLP tasks.
Conclusion
Roman Urdu NLP is a rich, underexplored field. South Asian social media data volume is growing rapidly. Robust preprocessing tools are now critical for building inclusive AI systems.
